Was I an enabler? Are you?
Early on in my recruitment career, I took a job brief over the phone for an accounts receivable clerk. At the end of the brief, the client said he didn't want any Asians. When I asked what his reason was, he said they needed to have excellent communication skills. I replied: “So if they have excellent communication skills, you are open to Asians? To which he answered: “Between you and me, how many of them can speak proper English?”. We placed the job, but by accepting his criteria, was I actually in hindsight an enabler of racism? I think so. While we can agree that#blacklivesmatter, what choices are you making every day when the client asks for someone younger, older, female, male, black, brown, white? If I had my time again, my response I know now, would be very different. The world as it looks now is created by all of us by the choices we make. If not you, who? If not now, when?
